let's easternise the west

Westernization vs Modernization Let us first start with the biggest misconception that I have ever come across since having read about the British raj in history textbooks. What do these terms mean? Westernization refers to the practice of adopting western cultures as a part of our livelihood. This means that we get influenced by the ways of the west (mostly America and other European countries) and alter our own cultural edifice to supposedly “fit in” with the “new world”. Modernization refers to adoption of newer innovations and technology and to integrate them in daily lives in such a way as to make life easier and hassle free. When and why did they become synonymous? With the advent of the British who had managed to modernize before us, adopting their culture (westernization) started to directly corelate to modernization. It is time we break this association and I have a very strong feeling that we will. It is not news that social media has connected us to all part

The Counter productive effects of capitalism on art forms like cinema

What is capitalism?

Capitalism is an economic system where trade is controlled by private owners for profit. This system increases competition which results in better products and services because everyone works to be better than their rivals. Everyone knows that capitalism is the catalyst for advancement.

People and corporations create better products to engage more consumers. Innovation is the child of capitalism. Smartphones today have reached a saturation point where new products have almost nothing new than a “better camera” and “better battery” which was already very good to begin with. The only way these phones sell is not the product itself but the marketing strategies.

My point is capitalism has fast tracked innovation and better products and research. Saving people from dying wasn't the only incentive for making the covid 19 vaccines, it was obviously the “more important thing” - money.

Mentality of the general populace

People have very busy lives, as they should,  to be able to survive in this harsh world. When people work they use up their mental and physical energy. Leisure is for when all they wanna do is be spoon fed with entertainment. They don't want to use their brain power when relaxing. No! This is understandable.

This is what majority of todays movie makers capitalise on. People say Bollywood movies don't have depth and it is true, but there is a good reason for it. Majority of India, who is the audience of these movies are illiterate people who just want to have a good time with music (no wonder Bollywood movies have more songs than scenes), dance, a little comedy and over the top action sequences which defy every law of physics . This is all that they need. No wonder movies become so repetitive with he same stories and remade songs. But the thing is they work and they fill the producers pockets with money so thats all that matters.

Shakespeare and Leonardo da Vinci

They are legends of the past who are studied today. There are tons of theses written on their lives and work. People study their literature and art for years. This is because they have achieved something remarkable in their respective fields. They have revolutionised the way people think and imagine and showed us that there is a world of possibility outside of ones imagination.  Nobody just reads through a Shakespeare play like they’re reading a murder mystery in which its always the butler who is the killer. No. They study it, they understand it, they try to picture it, they work for it and finally when they completely understand it do they realise that none of the effort has gone in vain. Its amazing to get inside the brains of the most influential people and have an insight as to how their thought processes might have been.

Cinema and what it should be

I’ll l be honest. I’m an absolute Nolan fanboy. I have seen every one of his movies that i could find. He is truly a messiah of film making. He is bold enough to not care about pleasing the general population with generic movies. His movies take years to make and for one reason and one reason only. QUALITY.

His movies aren't the types of movies that you could watch when you're bored and tired. They have to be worked for. He brings bold new concepts that no other movie makers dare to explore. In one his behind the scenes he reportedly said that his movie “interstellar” which is a sci-fi space exploration movie, used no green screens. WHAT!

Yeah.

Every equipment was made with working hydraulic parts for simulating the motion of an actual spaceship. Nolan doesn’t like VFX and he believes that the maximum that he can capture on camera, the better. Hence the authenticity.

Superhero movies just a decade ago were cartoonish and unappealing. He revolutionised that with his Batman trilogy. The story was so well thought of and the character development especially that of the Joker was so good that people could connect with the dramatis personae. When you can relate with something on screen, however bizarre it may be, you can know for sure that what you're watching is damn good.

Tenet was a 2020 action movie which didn't do very well in the box office. People who watched it were dazed and confused and came out of the theatres not knowing what exactly had they just watched. But it wasn't a typical movie which you could just watch and forget about. It was a movie worthy of rewatching and being able to find new details and easter eggs in each viewing.

It was such a densely packed movie that by the time people could get hold of one concept a new one would be introduced and hence the frustration. Although this movie fell short on some aspects it showed us what CINEMA is truly about. The visuals of this movie are awe inspiring and they are something no-one has ever seen before. The choreography, the cinematography is just out of the world and it reflects the dedication and vision of Nolan.

I know this post has been a-lot about Nolan but he was my inspiration for this topic.

Art is the reflection of the vision of one woman/man.

Cinema is an art. Like paintings and music, it is just another medium to express and inspire, and this fact unfortunately, is being forgotten.
